Joan Lucas Lewis Holzhausen, 89 of Flat Rock, IN, formerly of Brazil, IN, passed away January 9, 2014 at the Columbus Regional Hospital following a brief illness. She was born August 21, 1924 in Putnam County, the tenth child of Henry Edward Moss and Mary French Moss. As a young girl, both her mother and father passed away and Joan was raised by her sister Ruby Diel and her husband Roy. She graduated from Reelsville High School. She married James Lucas and they lived in the Brazil area. He ran the DX Sunoco service station and she worked as a clerk for J.C. Penney in Brazil. James died suddenly on January 9, 1969. Joan later married Frederick Lewis and they lived in Louisville. Joan again worked for J.C. Penney and was a department manager. Mr. Lewis also passed away.
While in Brazil, Joan was a member of the First Christian Church and served as a Deaconess. She and her sisters remained very close and enjoyed playing cards together and just being together. Joan also was an Avon representative for several years.
On October 12, 1991, Joan was united in marriage to Walter Holzhausen. She and Walter have resided in Flat Rock, IN. They enjoyed spending winters in Bradenton, FL. Joan and Walter have been blessed with their years together and time spent with their families.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Roy Moss and Melvin Moss; eight sisters, Modesta, Hila, Ruby, Myrtle, Mildred, Laura, Jennie, and Betty.
Survivors include her loving husband Walter Holzhausen of Flat Rock; devoted daughter and son in law, Shirley Lucas Bozell (Richard), of Columbus, IN; two grandsons, Clark Bozell (Clare), Eric Bozell (Kerry), 4 great-grandsons, Lucas Bozell, Blake Bozell, Michael Veasey, and Cole Veasey; one step-son Dale Holzhausen (Sherry), one step-daughter, Dana Overman; step-grandchildren, Anthony Bozell (Deborah), Tanya Hughes (Harold), Josh Holzhausen, Heather Holzhausen; many nieces, nephews and extended family.
Services will be held on Tuesday at 1:00pm at French Funeral Home with Pastor Chris Gregg officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday 11-1. Burial will follow at Croy’s Creek Cemetery.
