Don Ewing Porter, 92, of Columbus, passed away at 10:02 a.m. Monday, January 13, 2014, at Four Seasons Health Care Center in Columbus. He was born on March 25, 1921, in Hartsville, the son of Dr. E.A. and Hester M. (Alley) Porter.

Mr. Porter was a past resident of Hartsville, Westport, Pittsfield, Massachusetts, Fort Wayne, Danville, Illinois, Schenectady, New York, Atlanta, Georgia, and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He graduated from Westport High School in 1939 and received his Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University in 1947. He retired from the General Electric Company and was a member of the Fairlawn Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed coin collecting and growing roses.

A veteran, Mr. Porter served four years in the U.S. Navy.

He married Coreta Cunningham at Westport Baptist Church on June 29, 1947. She survives along with his daughters, Deborah (John) Matoba of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Vickie (Charles) Pein of Columbus; his sons, James Addison Porter and Barry Alexander Porter, both of Columbus; his grandchildren, Stephanie Marie Carr of Houston, Texas, J. Christopher (Christina) Bruer of Fairfield, Ohio, J. Matthew (Rebecca) Rayl of Leesburg, Florida, Jillian D. Mishler of Columbus, Daniel E. Porter of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, David, Nicholas and Mary Matoba of Shorewood, Wisconsin, Marybeth (Mark) Hopkins of Box Springs, Georgia, Joseph (Karen) Rayl of Groveland, Florida, and Melissa (Eric) Zeitland of Boca Raton, Florida; his great-grandchildren, David (Carol) Hopkins, Ashley Hopkins, Justin and Joshua Rayl, Zoe, Avery and Daisy Zeitland, J.T., Aidan and Calista Carr, Emily, Catherine and Lance Bruer, Kaden Mishler, Ethan Rayl and Claire Rayl; and a great-great-grandchild, Evelyn Hopkins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Lucille (Porter) Gaynor, Marigail (Porter), Bentzen and Gene S. (Porter) Faulkner; his brothers, Jonathan Porter, Dr. Robert Porter, Tom Porter and David Porter; and a grandson, Michael David Porter.

The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 18, 2014, at Westport Baptist Church with visitation from noon until time of service. Rev. David A. Scaggs and Pastor Anne Marshall will be officiating. Burial will follow at Union Baptist Cemetery with military graveside rites.

Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to the Alzheimer's Association or Westport Baptist Church.

The funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Bass & Gasper Funeral Home in Westport.
