James M. Hughes, 75, of Westport, passed away unexpectedly at 10:27 p.m. Sunday, January 26, 2014, at the Decatur County Memorial Hospital Emergency Room. He was born September 4, 1938, in Decatur County, the son of Orval Maurice and Lorine B. (Wood) Hughes.
Mr. Hughes graduated from Sandcreek High School in 1956 and was a lifelong resident of Decatur County. He was a farmer and bus driver at South Decatur for 47 years and a member of Rockcreek Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. He enjoyed watching sports, watching his grandchildren play sports and driving the team bus at South Decatur for many years.
He married Alice Louise Hatfield in Shelbyville on August 4, 1962, and she survives. Other survivors include his daughter, Lori A. (Mitch) Nobbe of Westport; a son, Timothy Hughes of Greensburg; a sister, Marjorie Hughes of Crawfordsville; and three grandchildren, Noah, Trent, and Alli Nobbe, all of Westport.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Denny M. Hughes; a sister, Martha Hughes; and brother, Oscar C. “Bud” Hughes.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, January 30, 2014, at the Bass & Gasper Funeral Home in Westport with Rev. Doug Preston officiating. Burial will follow at Union Flat Rock Cemetery. A time of visitation will be held from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 29, 2014, at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to the American Cancer Society.
