Arthur “Eugene” Montgomery, 93, of Seymour, IN, passed away Monday, March 3, 2014, at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana in Columbus.
Eugene was born in Seymour, IN, on December 9, 1920, the son of Arthur and Emma (Nicholson) Montgomery.
On January 5, 1946, in Ft. Wayne, IN, he married Marjorie Elizabeth Kennedy, who he met while in the Army. She preceded him in death on December 20, 2003. In his own words, Gene said “I was blessed with 58 years of togetherness with my wife Marge, and we were blessed with three great children, five grandchildren, and one great-grandchild, and that made for a good life in this world. Now I went on to be with Marge to the world of eternal life. Through Jesus that promise is given by Him.”
While in the U.S. Army, Gene served as a Tech Sergeant under the command of Charles Mayo of the Mayo Clinic. He earned many ribbons and medals, including the American Theater Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with two Bronze Stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, Bronze Star Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
Gene was a salesman for Robin Hood Flour for 27 years. After retiring he became an auctioneer for 7 years and later he and his wife owned and operated an antique shop in Reddington for 25 plus years.
He graduated from Shields High School. Gene was a member of Reddington Christian Church, having served as a Sunday School teacher, an elder and board member. He was a member of the Gideons for over 13 years and also was a member of American Legion Post No. 89.
Mr. Montgomery is survived by his children, Janos (Bill) Bingham, Jim (Toni) Montgomery and Robin (Mike) Hall; five grandchildren, BJ (Anne) Bingham, Nathan Montgomery, Adam Montgomery, Travis (Leslie) Hall, and Cody Hall; seven great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Frank Montgomery and Norval Montgomery.
He is preceded in death by his wife and his parents.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 6, at Voss Chapel in Seymour with the Rev. Bill Weaver officiating.
Burial will take place at Reddington Cemetery with full military services conducted by VFW Post 1925, American Legion Post 89, Disabled Veterans 47, and Korean and Vietnam Veterans, all of Seymour.
Family and friends may call at Voss Chapel on Wednesday, March 5, from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. and Thursday from 9:30 a.m. until time of service.
Memorials may be written to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana or Reddington Cemetery.
