Mary Jane Bierlein, 82, of Columbus, died at 4:50 p.m. Thursday, March 20, 2014 at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility.
She was born in Bartholomew County, May 30, 1931, the daughter of the late Charles and Letha Folger Harrell. She married C. Alan "Al" Bierlein in Columbus on February 9, 1963, and he survives.
For many years, she was a registered nurse. She was the head nurse on the first open heart surgery conducted in Long Beach, Calif. Along with being a caring nurse, her greatest callings in life were being a mother and wife.
Mary was a member of St. Peters Lutheran Church of Columbus and was a former volunteer at Love Chapel.
In addition to her husband, Mary is also survived by a daughter, Elisabeth (John) Leonard of Augusta, Ga.; a son, Ben Bierlein of Indianapolis; a sister, Annette Cornpropst of Seattle, Wash.; and grandchildren, Johnny, Nick and Michael Leonard, all of Augusta, Ga.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and sisters, Bea Whipker and Charlene Bulpitt.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Myers-Reed Chapel on 25th Street. Pastor Mark R. Teike will officiate. Calling will be from 10 a.m. until service time Tuesday at the funeral home.
Inurnment will take place following the service at Garland Brook Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.myers-reed.com.
