Joseph H. Coombs, 97, of North Vernon, passed away at 7:45 p.m. on Friday, March 21, 2014 at Jennings Health Care Center in North Vernon.
Mr. Coombs was born on April 1, 1916 in Trimble County, Kentucky the son of James W. and Mary E. Rowlett Coombs. He married Alice Roberson on January 8, 1959; she preceded him in death on September 6, 1997.
Mr. Coombs worked as a foreman for North Vernon Forge, retiring in 1979.
Mr. Coombs is survived by his caregiver and nephew, Jimmie Roberson of North Vernon; a daughter-in-law, Linda Coombs of Columbus; eight grandchildren, Cheryl (David) Miller and Tonja (John) Castetter both of Butlerville, Carol (Jerry) Soutiere of Ponte Verde Beach, Fla., Donna Coombs, Dawn Coombs and David Coombs all of Texas, DeAnn (Chris Lough) Conley of Springfield, Ohio, and Natash (John) Brockhaus of Columbus; 10 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Alice Coombs; two sons, Donnie J. and James Coombs; five brothers, Truman, William A., Carl, Frank H. and Creed T. Coombs.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, March 24, 2014 at Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Services in North Vernon with the Rev. Ben Morris officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until service time Monday. Burial will be at Vernon Cemetery in Vernon.
Memorials may be made through the funeral home to St. Vincent Jennings Hospital.
