John Clarence, age 88, of Columbus, Indiana, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, March 19, 2014. He was born on October 14, 1925, in Flint, Michigan, the son of the late Amelia Clarence. John was married to Maxine Warner on September 15, 1945. She preceded him in death.
He retired from the federal government in 1987 and moved to Columbus to be near his young grandchildren and family. His interests included building projects and remodeling, repairing things around the house, collecting baseball cards, spoiling his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and spending time with his family.
Survivors include his sons, Jack Clarence of Flushing Michigan, Jim Clarence and his wife Chris of Flushing, Michigan, and Dan Clarence and his wife Peggy of Columbus, Indiana; five grandchildren, Jonathan Clarence of Nashville, Tenn., Ryan Clarence and his wife Desiree, and Emily Clarence of Columbus, Indiana, Tony Ballard and his wife Jenny, and Shane Ballard of Bartlesville, Oklahoma; and three great-grandchildren, Ellen Ann Gatza of Huntsville, Alabama, Megan Ballard of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, and Connor Clarence of Columbus, Indiana.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana, 2626 East 17th Street, Columbus, IN 47201.
A celebration of life will be held at Factory 12 Event Loft, 1325 Jackson St. in Columbus, on Sunday, March 30, from 3 to 5 p.m.
