William James Abdon, Sweetser, died at 5:54 a.m. Friday, March 28, 2014, surrounded by his family.
He was born to Roy E. and Catherine V. Abdon. William graduated from Marion High School in 1954. On September 2, 1955, he married Joyce Ann Ketcham of Canton, Illimois, who survives.
They have three children, Dorine Denise (Rick) Ward of Sweetser; Douglas Roy (Felicia) Abdon of Bringhurst; Darla Jean (Larry) Cox of Columbus.
William has seven grandchildren, Maria Nicole (Cardini) and Cliff Furnish of Sweetser, Travis Michael Roy Cardini of Cheyanne, WY, William James Abdon, II and Cody Michael Abdon of Bringhurst, Devin Deriek Cox, Elizabeth Joyce Cox and Raeanna Christine Cox of Columbus; and two great-grandchildren, Colbie and Corbin Furnish.
Honorably mentioned in 1953, William was elected to the Indiana All-Star football team and recipient of the Exchange Club for the Sportsmanship Award.
He was a past member of Sweetser Lions Club, Pleasant Township VFD, 50 year member of Samaritan Lodge 105 of Marion, Aero Club of Marion, Scottish Rites of Ft. Wayne, IN, Shriners of Corpus Christy, Texas, 12 year member of the Oak Hill School Corporation Board, former member of the Marion Church of the Brethren and Mt. Olive United Methodist Church of Marion and current member of Brownsville Texas United Methodist Church.
William retired after 40 years in the corrugated box business. He retired in 1995 from Bell Fibre Products of Marion.
William and his wife, Joyce, retired to Brownsville, TX in 1995.
Funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 1, 2014 at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, North Chapel, 1341 N. Baldwin Avenue, Marion, IN 46952, with Rev. John Bunch officiating. Burial will be in Grant Memorial Chapel, Marion. Calling will be from 5 to 9 p.m., with a Masonic Service at 7 p.mm on Monday, March 31, 2014 at the funeral home.
