Marie Bowen Griffin, 93, of Columbus, passed away Tuesday, April 15, 2014, at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility.
Survivors include a daughter, Judy Gayle (Robert) of Columbus, and two sons, Mark Griffin (Jan Harrison) of Colorado and Wayne Griffin (Karen Webster) of Arkansas. Marie is also survived by eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Marie was born in Duquesne, Pennsylvania, in 1920, and married Lloyd M. Griffin in 1941. Through the war years and afterward they moved several times, ending up in Columbus in the 1950s. A work promotion moved them to Indianapolis in 1968 and upon retirement they happily moved back to Columbus to be with family and friends. Lloyd preceded her in death in 1998. Thelma Bowen Kearns, her sister, also preceded her in death.
Mum, as her children called her, enjoyed homemaking, cooking, gardening, playing bridge and traveling. Marie was very active in the Columbus community. She volunteered at the Indianapolis Art Museum and the Columbus Art Museum. Her gardening skills and leadership were a valuable contribution to both the Let’s Grow Garden Club and the Whip-Por-Will Garden Club. She also used her gardening skills by doing the flower arranging at North Christian Church for many years.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Jonathan Moore Pike with Annette Barnes officiating. Calling will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. to service time Saturday. Private entombment is planned.
