Max E. Carothers, 83, of Brown County, died at 5:27a.m. Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at Winter Haven Hospital in Winter Haven, Florida.

Max was the owner of Max's Jewelry for the past 42 years, a member of East Columbus Christian Church, a board member of the Custer Foundation for several years and a Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War.

He enjoyed fishing and wintering in Florida.

The funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street with the Rev. Charles Aigner officiating. Family and friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and from  9 a.m. until service time Saturday.

Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery with military honors provided by the Bartholomew County Veterans Honor Guard.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or East Columbus Christian School.

Max was born in Columbus, October 26, 1930,  the son of Arnold and Laura Stillinger Carothers.

He married Iris V. Rhoads on April 16, 1950. She preceded him in death on May 23, 2008. He later married Margaret "Peggy' Percifield on June 12, 2009.

Survivors include his second wife, Peggy Carothers; his sons, Michael E. (Brenda) Carothers of Seymour, David E. (Nancy) Carothers of Columbus and Stephen E. (Carrie) Carothers of Columbus; grandchildren, Amanda (Peter) Washburn of Greenville, SC; Jessica (Brian) Powell of Columbus and Gretchen Carothers of Columbus; great-grandchildren, Max Washburn, Sydney Carothers and Cohen Powell; step grandchildren, Megan Walters, Sarah Oswald and Levi Walters; and a stepgreat-granddaughter, Lexi Miller.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Iris V. Carothers; brothers, Don and William Carothers; a sister, Geneva Clem;and grandsons, Kyle D. and Nathan E. Carothers.
