Jeffrey Andrew "Jeff" Garten, 37, of Peru, IN, passed away after a long battle with diabetes on Tuesday, April 22, 2014, at his home in Peru. He was born on January 30, 1977, in Logansport, IN.
Jeff graduated in 1995 from West Central High School where he was active with the Melodyaires choral group. Upon graduation from high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy just as his Grandfather Garten had done. He proudly served at Atsugi and Yokosuka Naval Bases in Japan from 1996 to 2003. He also served on the USS Curtis Wilbur (DDG-54) Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer while in Japan. Jeff obtained the rank of Gunner' Mate. He took advantage of the Navy's promise to see the world and was able to make friends with a wide variety of people.
He was a graduate of Lincoln Tech in Indianapolis, IN, and enjoyed working with his hands.
Jeff loved his family and will be dearly missed.
Survivors include his parents, William A. "Bill" and Jennifer J. Meyer Garten of Francesville, IN; daughters, Jaina Jade Garten of Russiaville, IN, Mariah Inomata Garten of Japan and Helen Steele of Wisconsin; his paternal grandmother, Mary Garten of Columbus; and his loving companion, Denise Nightingale of Peru.
He was preceded in death by an infant sister, Ashley Nicole Garten; paternal grandfather, William L. Garten; and maternal grandparents, Frank and Mary Mobley Meyer.
Private services will be held at Frain Mortuary Querry-Ulbricht Chapel in Francesville, IN, with Pastor James Ketchen officiating. Following cremation, private burial will take place at Roseland Cemetery in Francesville, IN. The American Legion will conduct military graveside services.
Memorial contributions may be given to the American Diabetes Association.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Frain Mortuary Querry-Ulbricht Chapel, Francesville.
