Dorothy M. Smith, 98, of Elizabethtown, died peacefully at her home, surrounded by her family, on Thursday, May 8, 2014, at 4:34 a.m.

Born in Bartholomew County on Jan. 30, 1916, she was the daughter of James L. and Daisy B. Daugherty Beshear. She had lived in the Elizabethtown area all her life and was a longtime member of  Elizabethtown United Methodist Church. She was a life member of Elizabethtown Order of the Eastern Star and had worked at Elizabethtown Grocery for many years. She proudly served with the Ladies Aid Society, was a member of local bridge clubs and enjoyed the game, watching the birds, her flowers, and being outdoors. She was a cat lover and was well known for her homemade pies.

Dorothy married Lawrence H. Smith April 19, 1930, in Scott County. He preceded her in death Oct. 24, 1971. Also preceding her in death were brothers and sisters, Hazel O’Neal, Betty Roberts, Kenny and Sam Beshear and Ruth Humes.

Dorothy is survived by two daughters, Jean (James L.) Brown of Elizabethtown and Pat (companion Dell Hill) Schnier of Columbus; grandchildren, Suzzette Holmes of Kill Devil Hills, NC, Melissa (Russell L.) Schmidt of Bloomington, and Kevin (Chemain) Nanney of Mooresville; great-grandchildren, Jeffrey, Amy and Emily Holmes and Vanessa and Ryan Schmidt; great-great-grandchildren, Jocelyn Schmidt and Lilianna Conley; and two faithful feline friends, Mitzi and Sweetie Pie.

Funeral service will be conducted at 2 p. m. Saturday at Hathaway-Myers Chapel on Pearl Street with Milo Smith presiding. Burial will follow in Springer Cemetery. Calling will be from noon until service time Saturday at the funeral home.
