Mr. John William Wright, age 85, of Columbus, IN, entered this life on November 12, 1928, in Carroll County, KY, the son of the late, Benjamin Franklin and Rosie B. (Garrett) Wright. He was raised in Carroll County, KY, where he attended school.
John was inducted into the United States Navy on January 10, 1946, in Louisville, KY, serving during World War II on the USS Yosemite. He received the World War II Victory Medal and was honorably discharged with the rank of Machinist's Mate Third Class on November 4, 1947, in Newport, RI.
John was united in marriage on March 28, 1948, in Vevay, IN, by Rev. Walter Peters, to Bernice M. Rucker, and to this union arrived three sons to bless their home. They shared 43 years of marriage together until her death on July 22, 1991, after losing a courageous battle to cancer. John was later united in marriage on July 2, 1992, in Nashville, TN, to Joan (Griffith) Scott. John and Joan shared nearly 22 years of marriage together until his sudden death.
John was employed as a lasting operator for the U.S. Shoe Factory in Vevay, IN, retiring after 42 years of service. He also was employed as a vehicle transporter for the Bob Poynter dealerships in Columbus, IN. John was a meticulous farmer and had farmed all of his life in the Moorefield Community, retiring in July of 1990 and moving to Columbus. He was a member of Spring Branch Baptist Church in Vevay, IN.
John will be remembered for his love of motorcycles, cars and gardening.
John died at 5:51 p.m. Saturday, May 10, 2014, at Columbus Regional Hospital.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 22 years, Joan (Griffith) Scott Wright of Columbus, IN; sons, John Stanley Wright and his wife Jodi of Columbus, IN, and Jody Franklin Wright and his wife Stephanie of Watkinsville, GA; a stepson, Barry L. Scott of Greenwood, IN; grandchildren, Brian John Wright of Orlando, FL, Jayna Marie Wheeler and her husband Dan of Columbus, IN, Mari Rose Wright of Watkinsville, GA, and Halee Marie Wright of Watkinsville, GA; great-grandchildren, Christian Wright, Colten Wright, Daniel J. Wheeler, Taylor Wheeler, Kyler Wheeler, Cole Wheeler and Kyndal Wheeler; stepgrandchildren, Mark Scott, Eric Lee Scott, Robin Scott and Barry Scott Jr.; stepgreat-grandchildren, Colton Scott, Kaylee Scott, Austin Scott and Rylan Scott; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife of 43 years; a son, William Walter Wright; a brother, Walter L. "Mike" Wright; and a sister, Elizabeth Jackson.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 14, at Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home, 208 Ferry Street, Vevay, IN 47043. Calling will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be at Vevay Cemetery with full military rites.
