James A. Brooks, 65, of North Vernon, passed away at 1:45 p.m. Friday, May 16, 2014 at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 20, 2014 at Sawyer–Pickett Funeral & Cremation Service. The Rev. Al Davisson will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 until 8 p.m. Monday and from noon until the time of the service Tuesday. Interment will be in Vernon Cemetery.
James was born January 8, 1949 in Indianapolis. He was raised by his adoptive parents, Merle and Perle Brooks. He married Carolyn Matthews May 5, 1973.
He graduated from North Vernon High School in 1967. He served in the United States Army from 1969 to 1971 where he served in Korea and Vietnam. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service where he was a mail carrier for 30 years. He was a big NASCAR fan. His favorite drivers were Dale Earnhardt, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. He also liked woodworking and photography.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Brooks of North Vernon; two daughters, Kimberly and Melissa Smith of North Vernon; a brother, John Brooks of Pleasant Gardens, N.C.; a half-brother, Malcomb Brooks of Mississippi; an aunt, Marlene Hudson of Jonesville, N.C.; grandchildren, Bryce Downs of North Vernon, and Ella and Noah Smith of Franklin.
He was preceded in death by his adoptive parents; and an uncle, Malcomb Brooks.
Memorials may be made through the funeral home to the American Cancer Society.
