Herschel Frederick Kleffman, 86, of Seymour, Indiana, passed away at his home on Thursday, July 17, 2014. He was born on December 14, 1927, in Bartholomew County, Indiana, the son of August Frederick and Malinda Hoene Kleffman. He married Doris May Marsh on September 17, 1949, at St. Paul Lutheran Church-Borchers.
A 1945 graduate of Cortland High School, Herschel was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy from 1945 until 1954. He was employed by Cummins Engine Company for over 30 years, retiring in 1984, then managed Jackson County Water Utility for eight years, retiring in 1992.
He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church-Borchers, American Legion Post No. 89, Jackson County Beef Producers and Star Promenaders Square Dance Club. He enjoyed golf, dart ball, hunting, fishing and traveling for vacations. In his retirement years he also enjoyed farming.
He is survived by Doris, his wife of 64 years; daughters, Carmen (Nolan) Herkamp and Tamara (Max) Shelton, all of Seymour; a son, Todd Kleffman, of Indianapolis; three grandchildren, John (Raylene) Herkamp, Paul (Canaan) Herkamp, and Meghin Shelton; 11 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Mildred Carter; a brother, Virgil (Maude) Kleffman; and numerous nieces and nephews.
His parents and a foster brother, Carl O. Hooker, preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 21, 2014, at St. Paul Lutheran Church-Borchers where the Rev. Stephen Wood will officiate. Visitation will be at Burkholder Funeral Chapel in Seymour, from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, July 20, 2014, and on Monday from 10 a.m. until service time at the church.
Burial will take place at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery-Borchers, with military graveside rites provided by American Legion Post No. 89, V.F.W. Post No. 1925, D.A.V. No. 47 and Vietnam Veterans No. 7, all of Seymour.
