Bernice M. Ross, 103, of Columbus, passed away at 11:45 p.m. Thursday, August 7, 2014, in the Silver Oaks Health Care Center.
Bernice was born October 10, 1910, in Jackson County to the late John and Ida (Stanfield) Sweany. She spent her early years in Jackson County and moved to Columbus in 1933.
Bernice married Joseph D. Ross on April 15, 1933, and he preceded her in death on September 17, 1975.
She was a charter member and the oldest living member of the First Church of the Nazarene. She served her church in many capacities as church treasurer, secretary of the prayer, fasting group, taught Sunday school, and was a member of the church missionary society. She was an avid reader and loved to crochet and sew.
Bernice leaves behind her daughter and son in law, Jean M. (Bobbie) Shelton of Springfield Ohio. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Ida Sweany; her husband, Joseph D. Ross; a son, Joseph Dean Ross; twin daughters, Janet and Janice Ross; and brothers, Harold, Gerald, Virgil, and Raymond Sweany.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, August 11, 2014, at the First Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. Brian Rogers officiating.
Friends are invited to visit with the family on Monday from 10 a.m. until service time at the church. She will be laid to rest beside her husband in Garland Brook Cemetery following the church service.
Bernice requested that memorial contributions in her memory be made to the First Church of the Nazarene or Our Hospice of South Central Indiana.
