Norris Wayne Howard, 93, of Madison, died at 1:50 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2014, at his daughter's home in North Vernon.
He is survived by two daughters, Susan Howard Schafer of North Vernon, Indiana, and Jane Wakeland and her husband, Robert, of Greenfield, Indiana; his son, John N. Howard and his partner, Dr. Fred McCall of San Francisco, California; his grandchildren, Jessica E. Schafer, Rachel M. Montgomery (SrA Mark), Andrea L. Ticknor, Lydia E. Stepp (Sgt. Kenneth), Rebecca J. Schafer, Jera Lee Cronin, Angie Lee, Shawn Shepherd, and Steven Shepherd; his great-grandchildren, Urijah and Reide; his stepgrandchildren, Brent Wakeland (Jenny) and Laura Moore (Ronnie); his stepgreat-great-grandchildren, Daisy, Declan, Austin and Abigail; and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his father on Sept. 20, 1969; his mother, Cullie Locke Howard Cancilla Jan. 26, 2001; his wife of 52 years, Mary Alice Furnish Howard, on April 23, 2011; a daughter, Ann Shepherd; and a son-in-law, the Rev. Lawrence E. "Larry" Schafer, on March 10, 2013.
Norris entered this life February 27, 1921, in Switzerland County, Indiana, on Indian Creek near Vevay. He was the loving son of the late Joshua Howard and Cullie Locke Howard Cancilla.
Norris was a 1940 graduate of Vevay High School and attended Indiana Central Business College for two and a half years. He enlisted in the United States Navy on November 18, 1942, in Indianapolis, Indiana. He rose to the rank of Seaman First Class during World War II and was honorably discharged August 25, 1945, at Great Lakes, Illinois. On October 22, 1958, at Switzerland Baptist Church in Vevay, Indiana, he was united in marriage to Mary Alice Furnish by the Rev. Sonny Hays.
Norris was first employed with General Motors at its Allison Plant in Indianapolis as a materials scheduler. He then worked in North Vernon for ITT Thompson Industries as the personnel and safety director for over 20 years then went to work for Cummins Engine Company as a machine operator. He had last worked in Edinburgh, Indiana, for David R. Webb Veneers as the Safety Director, retiring when he was 65 years of age. Norris was a faithful member of North Madison Baptist Church and enjoyed gardening and being outdoors. He enjoyed spending time with his family, watching Cincinnati Reds baseball and IU basketball.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, August 25, 2014, at Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre, 325 Demaree Drive in Madison, Indiana, with the Rev. Donald F. Locke officiating. Calling will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 24, and from noon until service time Monday. Burial will be at Vevay Cemetery.
A final salute will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home by Jefferson American Legion Post No. 9, with military honors to follow at the cemetery.
