Phyllis Diana Hale Sewell, 72, died at 10:48 p.m. Wednesday, August 27, 2014, at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility. She was born January 28, 1942, in Dayton, KY, to the late Orlando and Margaret Rowe Hale. She married Ronald Sewell January 1, 1984, in Rockville, MD. He survives.
Phyllis grew up in Dayton, KY, graduating from Dayton High School before attending and graduating from Cincinnati Christian University, with graduate studies at Xavier University in Cincinnati.
Following graduation from college, Phyllis was employed as an editor with Standard Publishing in Cincinnati; as a reservations agent with Delta Air Lines in Cincinnati, Washington, D.C., and Baltimore; in several administrative positions with General Electric and IBM in Washington, D.C.; and as assistant to the president of Reising Radio Partners in Columbus, IN.
Her passion was Christian music and she loved participating in bell choirs. She was a gifted singer and enjoyed singing both solo and choral music in church settings, most recently with First Christian Church Choir, Columbus, IN.
Phyllis loved to travel with husband, Ron, and she dearly loved being with her kids and grandkids. Her other hobbies included Bible studies, history, genealogy and reading, especially “cozy” British mysteries.
She moved with her husband to Columbus in 1991 and fell in love with her newly adopted community. She became an Architectural Tour guide with the Visitors Center to learn more about Columbus. She was a member of First Christian Church and an active participant in the Works-In-Progress Life Group. Phyllis was also a member of Daughters of the American Revolution, Joseph Hart Chapter, in Columbus.
In addition to her husband, Phyllis is survived by son, Christopher (Lisa) Crabill of Fort Worth, TX; daughters, Kelly (Keith) Mozena of Woodstock, GA, Shannon (Dan) Baker of Oneonta, NY, and Wendie (Chris) Jordan of Johnson City, TN; a sister, Marilyn Hale of Frankfort, IN; and grandchildren, Daniel, Kelsey and Ally Baker and Sydney and Ryan Jordan.
She was preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Wanda Hale and Kathleen Hobt.
Family and friends may call from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, August 31, at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home on 25th Street. A memorial service will be conducted immediately following visitation at 4:15 p.m., with Justin White and Dan Wallace officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to First Christian Church, Columbus, or to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana.
