Adalene Greathouse, age 93 of Columbus, went to be with the Lord at 1:10 p.m. on Saturday May 19, 2012, at Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Care Facility. She was surrounded by the love of her family.
Adalene was a charter member of Berean Bible Church of Columbus, where she served as Sunday School teacher, in the nursery ministry, and on the Ladies Missionary Society. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, her devotion to her family and the Lord was her life.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 22, 2012, at Jewell–Rittman Family Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerry Day Sr. officiating. Calling will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today, and from 12:30 p.m. until service time on Tuesday. Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery.
Born March 31, 1919, in Mercer County, Kentucky, Adalene was the daughter of James W. and Rosa Ellen Royalty Darling. She attended Clearspring High School. She married Everett Greathouse on August 20, 1937, in Columbus. They have four children.
Survivors include her children, Darrel (Mary) Greathouse and Orletta (Joe) Roth, both of Columbus, Hollie (Kay) Greathouse of Indio, California, and Nancy (Ron) Spurgeon of Columbus. Adalene had eight grandchildren, including, Kevin (Beth) Roth, Steve (Beth) Roth, Jeff (Erica) Greathouse of Long Beach, California, Beth (Jay) Morris, Curt (Angie) Spurgeon, Keith (Jacque) Greathouse, Joe (Christy) Spurgeon, and Ben (Laura) Spurgeon. Her 14 great-grandchildren include, Ryan Roth, Derek Roth, Kyle Roth, Nicholas Roth, Emily Morris, Will Morris, Sean Roth, Savannah Spurgeon, Garrett Spurgeon, Aaron Spurgeon, Cayden Spurgeon, Isaac Spurgeon, Ty Greathouse, and Cameron Greathouse. Also surviving are Mrs. Samuel Curtis Darling, sister-in-law, and several nieces and nephews.
Adalene was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Everett Greathouse, on September 8, 1995; her parents; brothers, James Hollie Darling and William Earl Darling, both of whom were killed in World War II, Samuel Curtis Darling, and Ben Darling; sisters, Thelma Sharp, Anna Weekly, Nancy Hester Devine, Reva Mayes, and Vergie Hart.
