James P. Frederick, age 83, passed away in Columbus, IN, on June 14, 2012.
Jim was born November 19, 1928, in Jeffersonville, IN, to John Dominic and Addie Frederick. He graduated from St. Xavier High School in Louisville and earned his mechanical engineering degree from Purdue University in 1950.
After completing Army basic training at Fort Knox in 1951, Jim was assigned to the First Guided Missile Group in Fort Bliss, Texas. Upon discharge from the Army, he was hired in the Missile Division of Chrysler Corporation. He later worked on rocket launch systems for NASA when the organization was first formed for space exploration. Jim worked at Cummins Engine Company from 1966 to 1989, retiring as Corporate Director of Assembly and Test Technology. He spent the remainder of his working years as an engineering consultant in the area of engine test technology.
Jim served in many capacities in community and church activities including as a representative and then president of the Ecumenical Assembly of Bartholomew County. During his tenure as president he was instrumental in founding the Child Care Clinic to help meet the needs of children who otherwise might not receive proper medical attention. He also served on the Executive Committee of Catholic Charities and the Campaign for Human Development of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis. In addition, Jim served as Chairperson of the Building Committee for St. Agnes Parish in Brown County. Jim was a Benedictine Oblate of Our Lady of Grace Monastery in Beech Grove, IN.
Jim was very generous and always concerned with others before himself. He often used his free time helping family, friends and those in need. Jim had a strong work ethic and started working at nine years old in his father’s grocery store. He loved to care for his grandchildren and spend time with them. His grandchild Scott, who preceded him in death, coined his nickname “Pop.” Jim had a quick wit and dry sense of humor. He was also kind and humble.
Funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Agnes Parish in Nashville, IN, with Father Eric Johnson officiating. Calling will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service Friday at the church. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Indianapolis.
Jim is survived by Barbara Frederick; one daughter, Sr. Anne Frederick OSB; seven sons and their spouses, Mark (Beth) Frederick, Tom (Lani) Frederick, Neil Frederick, David (Beth) Frederick, Shawn (Lora Lyn) Frederick, Matthew (Mary Ann) Frederick, and Jay (Shawn) Frederick, 13 grandchildren, Richard Croddy, Luke Frederick, Amy Haag, Meri Elaine Noble, Sean Frederick, Meghan, Noelle, Alex, Michaela, Lauren, Evan and Emelia Frederick, and Solomon Gearheart, one great-grandchild, Trey Croddy; and one sister, Rita Ann Vernia of New Albany.
He was preceded in death by a brother, John D. Frederick of Indianapolis; a sister, Margaret Kristoff of Clarksville; and a grandchild, Scott Frederick of Columbus.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation, St. Agnes Parish in Nashville, IN, or Our Lady of Grace Monastery.
