Martha Jean Greathouse, 83, of Columbus, died at 12:55 a.m. Tuesday, July 10, 2012, at Kindred Transitional Care & Rehabilitation of Columbus.

Born in Orange County, July 11, 1928, Mrs. Greathouse was the daughter of Henry Morton and Cora Frances Clements Wallace.

She worked at Arvin Industries where she met her future husband, Lester Greathouse, and they always had lunch together. They were married April 17, 1954. He preceded her in death on August 28, 1978.

While living in Brown County, she was a member of Mount Nebo Methodist Church and was active in children's activities including Vacation Bible School.

After the death of her husband, she moved to Columbus, joined the Columbus Free Methodist Church and participated in Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and other activities and sang in the church choir. Her church and church family were very important to her.

While living in Brown County and Columbus, Martha baby-sat several years for working mothers.

Martha was a neighbor to all. She and the other ladies with birthdays in July always celebrated by going out to lunch, sightseeing and shopping.

The funeral will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street with Pastor Mark Hurt officiating.

Family and friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 9:30 a.m. until service time Friday.

Burial will be at Christiansburg Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to Columbus Free Methodist Church, Hospice of South Central Indiana, the American Cancer Society or the donor's choice of charities.

Survivors include her sister, Edith Marthin of Columbus; a daughter, Wanda (David) Edwards of Indianapolis; grandchildren, Sandy (Chaz) King of Seymour and Lester (Kristin) Brown of Greenwood; great-grandchildren, Marka, Matthew and Devin Brown and Newla Jane King; and many nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Greathouse was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; sisters, Lois Wolfe, Helen Bell, Elizabeth Sewell, Mary Wallace and Margie Bridges; and brothers, Otto, Paul, Leon and Donald Wallace.
