Charles Walter Burkman, 86, of Scipio, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at Jennings Health Care at 9 p.m. Friday, July 27, 2012.
Charles was born May 20, 1926, in Burney, the son of Grover Burkman and Minnie May Bliton Burkman. He married Mary Louise Hines, the love of his life, in Columbus on July 31, 1948. She survives.
He was employed by Cummins Inc. from 1950 to 1982, where he worked in quality assurance. Charles retired after 32 years of service at Cummins. Charles was a 1944 graduate of Scipio High School. He served in the US Army during WWII.
Charles was a former member of Crossroads Community Church. He had a passion and a gift for carpentry and woodworking.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Leslie, Glenn and Harold Burkman; and three sisters, Lora Barringer, Ruth Jean Bannister and Lena Burkman.
Charles is also survived by a son, Mike (Barb) Burkman of Scipio; daughters, Sherry Burkman of Scipio and Debbie (Delbert) Rust of Seymour; two brothers, Robert Burkman of Scipio and Harry (Carolyn) Burkman of Columbus; six grandchildren, Dusty (Amy) Burkman of North Vernon, Josh (Brooke) Burkman of Versailles, Amanda (Scott) Jackson of Seymour, Beth (Mike) Albert of Seymour, Tonya Ryker of North Vernon and Rachel (Justin) Amos of Seymour; and 12 great-grandchildren, Luke Jackson and Lainey Jackson, both of Seymour, Spencer Parrish of Seymour, Jerod Palmer of North Vernon, Peyton Heyne, Paxton Heyne and Preston Heyne, all of Seymour, Samuel Burkman and Rhett Burkman, both of North Vernon, and Avery Perkinson, Bayla Burkman and Max Burkman, all of Versailles.
Funeral services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home and Cremation Services in North Vernon with Pastor Connie Barr officiating. Calling will be from 2 p.m. until service time Tuesday at the funeral home. Interment will be at Scipio Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the family to help with funeral expenses.
