Toronto third baseman Lawrie placed on 15-day disabled list

TORONTO — The Toronto Blue Jays have placed third baseman Brett Lawrie on the 15-day disabled list with a left ankle sprain.

The move was announced Wednesday, a day after he was injured while sliding into second base in Toronto's 9-3 win over Atlanta.

Lawrie stayed in the game after the play but was visibly hobbled while advancing to third base later in the inning and had to be replaced by a pinch-runner.

Lawrie is batting .209 with five home runs and 14 RBIs.

The Blue Jays also announced that right-hander Thad Weber was optioned to Triple-A Buffalo and right-hander Ramon Ortiz was designated for assignment.

The team also recalled right-hander Todd Redmond, selected the contracts of right-hander Neil Wagner and left-hander Juan Perez from the Bisons and designated first baseman Clint Robinson for assignment.
