New rules in effect for Ohio scrap metal dealers; registering of transactions now required

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio scrap metal dealers will be required to check an electronic list of previous offenders as part of new rules designed to thwart scrap metal theft.

In addition to the "do not buy" list, new rules for dealers that went into effect Sunday also include a daily transaction database of purchases.

The transaction database allows registered dealers to log data in a central repository, making it available to law enforcement via the Internet. It will list business transactions, including seller information and photo, and vehicles associated with the transactions.

Ohio Homeland Security Executive Director Richard Baron says the new registry will limit thieves trying to resell stolen scrap metal and should start taking a bite out of the crime.
