BRISTOL, Virginia — The Virginia Department of Transportation says flooding and slides have closed roads across Southwest Virginia.

The department says in a news release that about 70 roads were closed because of flooding as of 10 a.m. Thursday.

Multiple slides also have occurred in the region. One slide has closed a section of Route 609 along Bull Creek in Buchanan County.

A section of Route 65 between Fort Blackmore and Dungannon is closed following a pipe collapse on Wednesday night. The department says the cause of the collapse was strain following two weeks of wet weather. The pipe will be replaced and the road repaired when the weather improves.

Snow fell across much of Virginia on Thursday. VDOT asked motorists to avoid driving so crews can clear roads.
