Republican lawmakers' nominee ousts Democratic Maine treasurer

AUGUSTA, Maine — Maine's Democratic state treasurer has been ousted by Republican lawmakers' nominee.

Terry Hayes of Buckfield was elected treasurer by a joint convention of the Democrat-controlled House and Republican controlled-Senate on Wednesday. She defeated incumbent Neria Douglass.

Hayes served eight terms in the House as a Democrat before going to work for independent Eliot Cutler's unsuccessful bid for governor this year and dropping out of the Democratic Party. Hayes is now an independent. She said Wednesday that she believes she was successful in her bid because she has earned the trust of her colleagues.

Democratic Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap defeated former Republican Senate Majority Leader Jon Courtney to win another term. Democratic Attorney General Janet Mills defeated Republican nominee Bill Logan to remain in her post.
