NATCHEZ, Mississippi — Adams County leaders have signed a $3 million loan to help finalize the sale of Natchez Regional Medical Center.

Board of Supervisors attorney Scott Slover tells The Natchez Democrat (http://bit.ly/XumqMI ) the loan will pay administrative fees to close out the sale of the county-owned hospital and fulfill a requirement of a plan submitted to the bankruptcy court.

"I wasn't happy about it, but I signed it," Supervisor Mike Lazarus said. "But I didn't have much of a choice did I? I could have either signed that, or we could have killed the sale, but the sale has to go through."

Community Health Systems, the owner of Natchez Community Hospital, has agreed to purchase Natchez Regional. If the court approves the sale, it will close Sept. 30. Community Health Systems would then have 13 hospitals statewide, with about 15 percent of the average daily patient count, according to 2012 state Health Department figures. The company is the largest hospital operator in Mississippi.
