FAYETTEVILLE, North Carolina — A Cumberland County sheriff's deputy has been fired after an internal audit showed he had misappropriated and sold ammunition.

The sheriff's office issued a statement on Friday saying 45-year-old George Richard Newton III had been fired. Newton had been with the sheriff's office since August 1993.

No other details about the result of the audit were made available.

A spokeswoman says the matter has been referred to the district attorney to determine if further investigation is called for and for potential criminal charges.
