TACOMA, Washington — Djuan Piper converted an off-balance jumper from just inside the foul line with 5.1 seconds remaining to lift Rainier Beach over Eastside Catholic 47-45 and earn a third straight Class 3A boys state championship.
Mandrell Worthy was stripped of the ball near midcourt as Eastside Catholic attempted to get a tying shot in the closing seconds.
It's the eighth title for Rainier Beach and first time a team has won three straight titles in any of the state's top four classifications.
Shaqquan Aaron scored 16 of his game-high 22 points in the second half to lead Rainier Beach.
Worthy, who led the team with 21 points, scored six straight points as part of an 11-2 run by Eastside Catholic to take a 24-19 lead.
Trailing 26-21 at the half, Aaron started to heat up after a 1 for 7 start to the game. Aaron hit a pair of 3-pointers as part of a 10-3 run by Rainier Beach to open the second half and re-take the lead.
Rainier Beach shot 4 of 17 at the foul line in the second half allowed Eastside Catholic to keep the game close. Piper scored with 1:06 left to play to take the lead but was answered by Matisse Thybulle to once again draw even at 45-all.
Ian Christie pulled down 17 rebounds for Eastside Catholic. David Crisp finished with 10 points for Rainier Beach, eight coming at the start of the game.
Earlier on Saturday, Kyle Foreman scored 20 points to lead Bellevue to a 71-61 victory over Wilson to claim third place. Bellevue scored 23 points off 21 Wilson turnovers in the victory. Sharif Khan scored 13 points for Bellevue. Gunther Klimes added 12 with eight rebounds. Alphonso Anderson had 23 points and 15 rebounds to lead Wilson. David Jenkins added 11.
Also, Jamie Orme and Jacob Lampkin each recorded double-doubles as O'Dea took fourth place with a 64-50 over Stanwood. Orme scored 20 points with 13 rebounds on six 3-points and 8 of 12 shooting at the foul line. Lampkin added 14 points and 17 rebounds for O'Dea. Karsten Chaplik led the way for Stanwood with 15 points. Josh Thayer added 12.
