2 companies submit plans for northern Indiana city's deteriorating 128-year-old building

ELKHART, Indiana — Two companies have submitted plans to a northern Indiana city for taking over a deteriorating 128-year-old downtown building.

Elkhart economic development director Barkley Garrett says the proposals for the Elkhart Armory building are being reviewed as officials consider whether to help save it or have it demolished.

Garrett tells The Elkhart Truth (http://bit.ly/17yV4r2) that the city's redevelopment commission could pick one of the preservation proposals and give the company more time to work on details.

The building has housed an auto dealership, skating rink and grocery store over the decades but has been vacant for more than two years. Officials are worried about the building's safety after the roof began to collapse over the winter from the weight of snow.

Demolition bids range from about $134,000 to $273,000.
