TUSCALOOSA, Alabama — Tuscaloosa police say a former high school teacher accused of having a sexual relationship with a student has been arrested.

Tuscaloosa police Sgt. Brent Blankley said in an emailed statement Friday that 23-year-old Jessica Bonnett Acker of Northport is charged with being a school employee engaging in a sex act or deviant sexual intercourse with a student under the age of 19.

Police say the boy Acker is accused of having a relationship with is 18 years old. Alabama law prohibits teachers from having intimate relationships with students under age 19.

Police say interviews were conducted with Acker and the boy before she surrendered to authorities.

Blankley says Acker is being held in the county jail on $5,000 bond. It's unclear if she has an attorney.
