NJ man admits firing shots that killed man, wounded woman in casino parking garage carjacking

MAYS LANDING, New Jersey — A southern New Jersey man was sentenced Friday to 47 years in prison for fatally shooting a man and wounded a woman during a carjacking inside an Atlantic City casino parking garage.

Camden resident Phillip Byrd pleaded guilty in March to felony murder in a plea deal with Atlantic County prosecutors.

Twenty-two year-old Byrd and two other Camden men were accused of robbing 28-year-old Sunil Rattu and 24-year-old Radha Ghetia in September 2011. The victims were forced to drive from the Trump Taj Mahal parking garage to an alley, where they were shot.

The Press of Atlantic City reports http://bit.ly/12wqvSg that 19-year-old Raheem Simmons was set to be sentenced Friday but made a motion to withdraw his guilty plea.

Twenty-one-year-old Eric Darden has been given a 40 year sentence.
