RALEIGH, North Carolina — The new executive director of the North Carolina Democratic Party won't be announced as expected on Wednesday.
Party Chairman Randy Voller says he has delayed naming a replacement for Robert Dempsey, who was fired on Sunday. Voller announced the delay after a conference call Tuesday night with the party's executive council.
Voller has declined to discuss Dempsey's firing. But in an interview Tuesday, he said he's been talking to former national NAACP executive director Ben Chavis about the job, though nothing has been settled.
Voller says weather played a factor against holding a Wednesday news conference.
The council voted Tuesday to name Casey Mann as short-term interim director but would have to agree to make any executive director permanent. The council is expected to meet face-to-face within 30 days.
