Police: man who threatened officer by throwing large stone shot once in leg

MEMPHIS, Tennessee — Memphis police say an officer shot a man who hurled a large rock at him in front of the Shelby County Justice Center.

The man, 19-year-old Will Ford, has been charged with aggravated assault for the Friday incident.

The officer, whose name has not been released, was on Poplar Street when he saw the man walking with a large stone. A statement from Memphis Police says the officer ordered the man several times to drop the stone, but he held on to it and threatened the officer.

Police say Ford then threw the stone at the officer, and the officer shot once at Ford, striking him in the thigh.

Ford was listed in serious condition at Regional One Hospital.

Memphis police say the officer is off duty while the shooting is investigated.
