Orange County man convicted of smothering girlfriend's 18-month-old son in a bedsheet

SANTA ANA, California — An Orange County man has been convicted of killing his girlfriend's 18-month-old son by smothering him in a bedsheet.

Cheyenne Fuimaono of Buena Park was found guilty Tuesday of second-degree murder, assault on a child resulting in death and child abuse. He could face 31 years to life in prison.

Prosecutors say Fuimaono had repeatedly abused the toddler, Malik Perez, and once bit him.

Authorities say Fuimaono was babysitting the child in November 2012 when the boy began crying. Unable to stop him, prosecutors say Fuimaono wrapped the boy in a bedsheet, covering his face, and left him unattended in a bedroom.

He later called 911 to report the boy wasn't breathing. The child was pronounced dead at a hospital.
