Driver, passenger run away from 1-car wreck in Durham that killed someone in backseat

DURHAM, North Carolina — Police say the driver and a passenger of a car that wrecked on a Durham freeway ran from the crash, leaving behind one of their passengers who would later die.

Investigators said in a news release that a Honda Civic registered in South Carolina lost control while speeding on NC 147 around 9:15 p.m. Wednesday and crashed into a guardrail.

Police say the driver and front seat passenger ran from the crash and haven't been found.

Authorities say two people in the backseat were ejected. One of them died at the hospital and the other is in critical condition. Their names have not been released.

Police say their investigation continues and no arrests have been made.
