NORTH PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island — A North Providence man has been charged with unnecessary cruelty after a malnourished dog he allegedly owned was euthanized.

Police say 47-year-old Brian Kenney was arrested Wednesday after he went to the police station for questioning.

Authorities say the dog was brought to the Rhode Island Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in critical condition due to malnutrition. He weighed just 37 pounds and was euthanized Tuesday.

An animal cruelty investigator for RISPCA says Kenney claimed the dog was abandoned in the parking lot of a PetSmart in Johnston and that his wife found the dog and recently brought it to him for care.

Authorities determined that Kenney had been the dog's owner.

Kenney is expected to be arraigned Thursday.
