BIRMINGHAM, Alabama — Federal prosecutors say a former heroin dealer has been sentenced to nearly five years in prison.

U.S. Attorney Joyce White Vance says 35-year-old Patropius Foster was sentenced Tuesday to four years and nine months in prison for dealing heroin.

Prosecutors say Foster sold heroin in Jefferson County between October 2012 and May 2013. Authorities have said Foster was one of 49 people to be charged in a heroin distribution ring and was arrested in Atlanta in April.

Prosecutors say of the 49 people who were indicted in the 2013 sweep, 40 have pleaded guilty and one was convicted during a trial. Authorities say one defendant pleaded guilty in selling heroin that led to someone's death.
