Alabama AG rejects call for formal hearings on utility rates in state

MONTGOMERY, Alabama — Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange has rejected a request from Public Service Commissioner Terry Dunn for an investigation into utility rates in Alabama.

Dunn had asked the attorney general to review how rates are set on behalf of the customers of Alabama Power Co., Alabama Gas Corp., and Mobile Gas Service Co.

Al.com reports (http://bit.ly/11OyeEq) that Dunn and fellow commissioners Twinkle Cavanaugh and Jeremy Oden are at odds over whether to hold formal hearings looking at utility rates in the state.

Oden and Cavanaugh favor an informal process for utility officials to answer questions from commissioners and the general public during a series of meetings.

Dunn seeks formal hearings of the type used to set utility rates around the nation.
