Memphis police: Man diagnosed with mental illness fires at officers before he is fatally shot

MEMPHIS, Tennessee — Police say a man diagnosed with mental illness was fatally shot during a standoff with officers at a home in Memphis.

Memphis police spokeswoman Alyssa Macon-Moore says 31-year-old James Greenwell shot at police before three officers returned fire and fatally wounded him.

Macon-Moore says officers went to the home Wednesday morning after Greenwell's father called police and told them his son had a gun inside the house and had fired a shot.

Macon-Moore says police arrived to see Greenwell, who was drunk, sitting on the front porch with a gun. Macon-Moore says officers tried to convince Greenwell to surrender before he began shooting.

Greenwell's father and his mother, who also was in the home, were not injured.
