GONZALES, Louisiana — After serving 37 years on the Ascension Parish School Board, A.J. Nickens has called it quits.

On Thursday, Nickens retired and notified the state of his decision to withdraw from the November election in which he would have faced one opponent, 47-year-old Shawn Sevario, of Prairieville.

The Advocate reports (http://bit.ly/1osBIYh ) the 76-year-old Nickens described the decision to retire as difficult but notes his family "would like for me to do more things that be on the School Board."

Now, he says, he and his wife, Gwendolyn, and their four children might re-form The Nickens Family band, which produced three gospel albums.

Nickens, meanwhile, will serve District 5 until his term ends at the close of the year.

Sevario will then fill the seat, with Nickens' withdrawal from the fall election.
