Man gets 2½ to 10 years in state prison for hit-and-run that badly hurt wheelchair user

GREENSBURG, Pennsylvania — A southwestern Pennsylvania man will spend 2½ to 10 years in state prison for a drunken driving hit-and-run accident that badly injured a man in a wheelchair.

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review ( ) reports 55-year-old Donald Eichler, of Rostraver, apologized Monday for the November 2012 accident.

Seventy-four-year-old Byron White had just closed his gun shop when Eichler's vehicle veered off the road. White now requires skilled nursing care and was forced to sell the business because of his injuries.

Eichler had been drinking at a social club that afternoon and was driving home when he hit White.

His attorney argued for leniency, blaming Eichler's alcohol addiction on losing his job five years ago. But Westmoreland County Judge Meagan Bilik-DeFazio says, "It's one thing to sit at home and drink, and another to drink and drive."
