SANTA ANA, California — An Orange County man who was sentenced to life in prison without parole at the age of 16 is free.

The Orange County Register (http://bit.ly/1EHKlGJ ) says Edel Gonzalez was released on Tuesday, two years after he was resentenced under a state law designed to give a second chance to juvenile lifers.

He'll be deported to Mexico because he arrived illegally in the U.S. when he was 3.

The former gang member took part in a 1991 carjacking in Westminster that killed Janet Bicknell. Gonzalez didn't pull the trigger but state law held him accountable.

His attorney, Bryant Yang, says Gonzalez was a model inmate.

In 2013, a judge resentenced Gonzalez to 25 years to life and gave him credit for time served. He won parole approval last fall.
