79-year-old man found dead, business destroyed following early-morning Roan Mountain fire

ROAN MOUNTAIN, Tennessee — Police say an early-morning fire that destroyed a Roan Mountain business also killed the 79-year-old man who lived in the apartment above it.

The Johnson City Press reports ( ) Carter County Sheriff Dexter Lunceford says officials found the body of Jerry Hopson inside the building after receiving an emergency call about a building on fire Sunday at Roan Mountain Lawn and Garden.

Lunceford says he wasn't sure how long firefighters worked to put the fire out. Lunceford says the cause of death isn't known yet, as the sheriff's department and State Fire Marshal's Office are working together to continue the investigation.

Lunceford says the preliminary investigation revealed a hot spot. Lunceford says that investigators don't suspect foul play about the start of the fire.
