FRANCONIA, New Hampshire — A hiker who reported having a medical emergency has been rescued by helicopter from New Hampshire's White Mountains.

The state Fish and Game Department says police received a 911 call on Friday afternoon reporting that the woman was having a medical emergency on the Garfield Ridge Trail in Franconia, about five miles away from the nearest trailhead.

Some passing hikers assisted the 31-year-old hiker, who was hiking alone, until help arrived.

An Army National Guard helicopter was called in and was able to evacuate the woman, who is from Bartlett, New Hampshire. She was taken to the parking lot at the Cannon Mountain ski resort where emergency medical responders were waiting to evaluate her.
