Delaware inmate dies after long illness

WILMINGTON, Delaware — Corrections officials say an inmate has died after a long illness.

The Department of Correction says 45-year-old Jonathan Banks of Wilmington died late Wednesday at a local hospital. He was an inmate at the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution near Wilmington.

Officials say Banks had been held since June on default of bail on charges of discharge firearm on street, carrying a concealed deadly weapon, and possession of a weapon in a safe school zone.

Banks' body has been turned over to the medical examiner, as is standard procedure.
