Ohio hands Lake Erie parks management to regional agency in Cleveland, with $14M for upgrades

CLEVELAND — Lake Erie parks in Cleveland are going to be operated by the regional Cleveland Metroparks system instead of the state of Ohio.

The Cleveland City Council voted unanimously Monday to transfer management of the parks along 14 miles of lakefront to Cleveland Metroparks.

Most of the parks belong to the city but have been leased by the state since 1978.

The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer (http://bit.ly/17UkrlR ) reports that one of the last steps necessary for the deal happened April 1 when Gov. John Kasich (KAY'-sihk) signed a $7.6 billion transportation and public safety budget bill.

It terminated state leases on the lakefront parks and transferred $14 million in state money to help bring the parks up to standard.
