Pilot, 79, injured in single-engine crash during takeoff near Buffalo

GASPORT, New York — A 79-year-old pilot has been injured in a single-engine plane crash near Buffalo.

The Buffalo News reports ( ) that the plane crashed while taking off from Royalton Airport in Gasport, New York at about 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

The newspaper reports that the man was airlifted from the crash site for treatment of facial injuries. His name was not immediately released.

The plane came down in a heavily wooded area to the right of the runway.

Officials said that while the trees cushioned the plane's descent and may have saved the pilot's life, they presented difficulties for emergency responders.

A backhoe was used to clear a path more than 200 yards into the woods so the pilot could be carried out on a stretcher.
