Officials say inmate assigned to Iowa State Penitentiary dies of natural causes

FORT MADISON, Iowa — Officials say an inmate assigned to the Iowa State Penitentiary has died of natural causes.

The state Department of Corrections says 76-year-old Jimmy Edward Gordon died Wednesday at the Fort Madison prison's medical unit.

Department spokesman Fred Scaletta says Gordon's death of natural causes was due to complications from dementia.

Gordon was serving a 25-year prison sentence for five counts of second-degree kidnapping and one count of first-degree burglary.
