Boy, 4, dies after being struck in Alexandria, mom also injured

ALEXANDRIA, Virginia — Authorities say a 4-year-old boy died after being stuck by a Jeep in Alexandria. The boy's mother was injured when she went after her son.

Police say the accident happened at 11 a.m. Saturday in the 6300 block of Stevenson Avenue. Police say the boy ran into the street. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. The boy's mother was treated for what appear to be non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Jeep, an 84-year-old man, stayed at the scene. Alexandria Police spokeswoman Ashley Hildebrandt says there was no crosswalk on the road and that there did not seem to be a specific reason that the boy ran ahead of his mother.

Police did not immediately identify the boy or his mother. An investigation is ongoing.
